Nikko day-trip · elevator to platform
Easy (long-but-doable). From Tokyo, shinkansen to Utsunomiya, JR line to Nikko, then a bus up to Chūzenji Onsen - 3-4 hours total. Possible as a long day-trip; a Nikko overnight is nicer. An elevator (small fee) drops to the lower viewing platform. Late October-early November for peak foliage; winter is icy but scenic. Pair with Lake Chūzenji and the ropeway.
