Worth it & getting there FIELD RATING
Moderate · Half-day+
2.5-3h drive · 4WD recommended · rough roads
Moderate. ~2.5-3 hours from Akureyri; a rental car is essential and 4WD is recommended for the rough approach roads (862/864). No fee. Doable as a long day-trip from Akureyri, better on a multi-day North Iceland loop. June-September (roads open, best weather) - winter access is tough. Pair with Selfoss just upstream.
